Description
The cross, located approximately 2 meters south of the sacristy of the Church of Saint Mylor, is a medieval granite monolith that stands very tall at 17 feet 6 inches, although 7 feet of its length is embedded in the ground. It has a rectangular shape and features a flared cross that is deeply cut between the arms. The bulbous head on the east and west sides is carved, and below the head on each side are damaged arms with carved rings. There are also some original incised concentric rings, likely pre-Christian decoration, visible below each cross. This cross was previously used as a buttress against an unsafe wall and was not recognized as a cross until it was relocated. It is noted as the tallest known cross in Cornwall and may represent a pagan monolith that was partially recut for use as a Christian symbol.
