Description
The Mylor Churchtown War Memorial is a Grade II listed structure, erected in 1920 to honor the parishioners who fell during the two World Wars. It features a tall, smooth granite wheel cross set on a square plinth, which has a rectangular granite panel at the front. Surrounding the memorial are low iron railings, with roughly worked granite pillars at each corner.
The plinth bears an inscription commemorating those who died in World War I, which reads: 'IN MEMORY OF THE PARISHIONERS WHO/FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919/ROLL OF HONOUR/1939-/1945/(NAMES)/MYLOR PARISH/CIVILIANS/ KILLED BY/ENEMY ACTION/(NAMES)'. This inscription lists eighteen men, including their surnames, ranks, and regiments. Additionally, the panel at the base of the plinth honors twenty soldiers and seven civilians who lost their lives in World War II, detailing their surnames, ranks, regiments, and ages at death.
The memorial is significant not only for its craftsmanship and design but also for its role in reflecting the impact of war on the local community. Its location provides good group value with the nearby listed structures associated with St Mylor Church.
