Description

Slades House Country Inn is a farmhouse that later became a public house, which includes an attached malt house. It dates from the late 17th century and was remodeled in the mid-18th century, with extensions added in the early and mid-19th century. The rear wing was rebuilt in the late 20th century.

The building is constructed of slatestone rubble and features a rag slate roof, which has a hipped end on the right and a gable end on the left. There are brick stacks at the ends and a stone rubble lateral hall stack at the rear. The higher parallel range at the back has a scantle slate roof.

The original plan likely consisted of three rooms with a through passage. The lower end on the left was heated by an end stack, the hall by a rear lateral stack, and the inner room on the right by another end stack. In the late 18th century, a parallel range was added at the rear, along with a rear wing behind the inner room on the right. The left side of the house was partly rebuilt in the mid-20th century. The rear wing served as a malt house in the 19th century, and the nearby River Camel was used for transportation until its course was altered in the 20th century. The rear wing was rebuilt in the late 20th century.

The exterior of the building is two stories high and has a regular front with six windows arranged in a 1:5 pattern. The window openings have dressed stone flat arches. The entrance is located to the left of center and features a 19th-century panelled door. There are two 16-pane sashes to the left, a 16-pane hornless sash, a 20th-century glazed door, and a three-over-pane sash to the right. The first floor has four early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sashes, a three-over-six-pane sash above the entrance, and a 20th-century 12-pane horned sash to the right.

Inside, the ceilings are plastered, and there is 19th-century joinery in the passage. The bar area has an unmoulded lintel over the fireplace. The interior has not been fully inspected.
