Description

Costilost Farmhouse is a building with probable origins in the 17th century, significantly remodelled in the 18th and early 19th centuries, and further extended in the late 19th or early 20th centuries, originally serving as a dower house for Pencarrow. It is constructed of stone rubble with some brick in the rear wall, with the front elevation slate hung, and has an asbestos slate roof with gable ends. The later range to the left is of snecked slate stone with a hipped slate roof. Axial and end stacks are present. The original plan is uncertain due to later alterations, but the earlier right-hand range appears to have been of double-depth construction, forming an 'L' shaped plan with a rear wing to the left. It possibly comprised three rooms, with an end stack heating the lower left room, an axial stack in the cross wall of the hall, and an end stack to the inner room, which seems to have served as a kitchen. The hall is smaller than the inner room. Mid-18th to early 19th century service rooms were added to the rear, creating a double-depth range, and possibly accompanied by the addition of the rear wing. A substantial extension was made in the late 19th or early 20th century to the left, featuring two large reception rooms with high-quality joinery. The symmetrical, four-window front on the left and the regular three-window front on the right display mullion and transom windows on the later range, with a central entrance featuring painted glass. The earlier section has a panelled 19th-century door, flanked by two 18-pane sashes and a 4-over-6-pane sash. Above are two 8-pane sashes and a 4-over-6-pane sash. The earlier range's interior features 18th-century two-panelled doors with HL hinges. One central room retains early to mid-18th century panelling, a moulded cornice, and a 19th-century slate chimney-piece. A late 19th or early 20th century staircase with barley-sugar twist balusters and a moulded rail is located to the rear of the earlier range. The later range has high-quality joinery throughout, including overmantles to chimney-pieces and cornices in the style of the 18th century.
