Description

The rock crusher station and ore bin, located approximately 30 metres west of the pump engine house to Marriott's shaft on the South Wheal Frances sett, is a Grade II listed structure. Built in the late 1890s for the South Frances United Mine, this base features large granite rubble facing with a solid core and has a rectangular plan oriented on a north-south axis. The structure is tall, with a sloped west side and a stepped east side that has an inverted V-shaped hollow. It was designed to receive ore transported from the headgear of the shaft via an elevated railway, with the crushed ore stored in hoppers before being sent to the West Basset stamps at Carnkie. This site is part of a significant group of remains from one of the best-equipped mines in Cornwall, which closed in 1918.
