Description

The Harriet Shaft Engine House is a derelict mine pump engine house, likely built in the late 19th century for Dolcoath Mine. It is constructed from uncoursed rubble with granite quoins, featuring a bob wall made of dressed granite blocks and window arches of brick. The building is currently roofless and has a rectangular plan oriented on a north-west/south-east axis, with the bob wall located to the north and a circular chimney attached at the south-west corner. The structure consists of three stages on a plinth, with round-headed openings, including a large cylinder door in the rear wall next to the chimney. The chimney is slightly tapered and has a moulded cornice, although the former brick upper stage is missing. A former shaft is located directly in front of the bob wall. The interior has not been inspected. Historically, this engine house once housed a 65-inch cylinder and is one of the few remaining monuments of the Dolcoath Mine, which was once the most productive tin mine in the world.
