Description

The Ellis Monument is a memorial monument located in Torpoint, built in 1897. It is made of granite and features three square granite steps leading up to a chamfered plinth. The base is square in plan and has a trefoil arch on each side, with gabled hoods supported by polished granite colonnettes. Each hood contains an inscription panel; three panels feature texts from the Bible, while the fourth bears a different inscription. The monument is topped with a square tapered shaft that supports a Celtic cross. It commemorates James B. Ellis, who drowned while saving the lives of two boys off Torpoint.
