Description
Carbeal Mill is a tide mill, likely built in the 18th century, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from random slatestone rubble and features a corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends. The mill faces the sea and previously had a mill pond on the landward side, although there are no sluice arches remaining on the water side.
The building is two storeys tall, with the landward side displaying two 2-light windows at the first floor, each with brick segmental heads. To the left, there is a lower two-storey addition that includes a 20th-century external stair leading to a 20th-century door, along with a single-storey 20th-century addition at the left end. The right end features 20th-century double doors. On the water side, there are two 2-light windows with brick segmental heads at both the ground and first floors, along with a door and upper window in the lower block to the right.
The interior has not been inspected. Currently, the mill is used as a boat shed, and a quay has been constructed on the water side. The mill was disused around 1905 when the lock gate was closed and the mill pond was filled in.
