Description

The range wall and Martini-Henry butts at Trevol Range are significant structures built in 1898, with later additions to the wings. The butts are believed to date from around 1880. The wall is constructed from snecked rockfaced limestone rubble, while the butts are made of random rubble with brick copings.

The range wall features a splayed wing on each side and measures about 50 metres high and 100 metres long. The wings have been rebuilt and ramped down to provide additional protection against fire scatter. The Martini-Henry butts to the east include cover blocks at each end, with walls connecting the front and rear. The rear wall is battered and has buttresses, standing about 3 metres high, with a ditch situated between the front and rear walls. Each end of the butts has a rectangular roofless block connected by a rear wall, which has a segmental-headed opening to the rear and to each side.

The Martini-Henry rifle, designed by Swiss inventor Frederich von Martini and modified by Alexander Henry of Edinburgh, was adopted as the British service weapon in April 1871. Granite markers would have been placed at intervals of 150, 200, 300, and 400 yards for firing into the butts.
