Description

No. 8 Store, also known as MO 55, is a store building located in Morice Yard, Devonport, built in 1722 and altered in the mid-20th century. It was designed by Colonel Lilly with Andrew Jelf, Clerk of Works, for the Board of Ordnance. The building is constructed from Dunstone rubble with granite dressings, has a rendered top storey and west gable, and features a slate roof. It has a rectangular open plan and stands three storeys high with an 11-window range. The middle and end bays project forward, with a former parapet raised above them. The entrances in these sections have flat arches and are fitted with mid-20th century doors and windows. The west gable has three windows and a central entrance. The second storey was raised in the mid-20th century and contains 6/6-pane sash windows.

Inside, the building has been extensively altered, featuring a concrete frame and stairs along with a mid-20th century roof. However, the ground floor retains a spine wall, some chamfered timber posts that support timber joists, and a large central transverse stair that rises from both sides. Historically, No. 8 Store was one of the original stores in Morice Yard used for gun carriages and equipment, paired with No. 4 Store. It was originally built against a quay that curved around the north side. Despite the alterations, including the loss of the original roof and the addition of the extra storey, No. 8 Store is considered part of a significant group of 18th-century naval stores within the best surviving naval ordnance yard in the country.
