Description

No. 4 Store (MO 70) is an ordnance store built in 1722, with the date 1723 inscribed on a hopper. It was designed by Colonel C Lilley and Andrew Jelf, Clerk of Works, for the Board of Ordnance. The building is constructed from Dunstone rubble with granite dressings and has a rendered west end, topped with a hipped slate roof that features a flat leaded section. It has a rectangular open plan.

The exterior consists of two storeys and an attic, with an 11-window range and three-window ends. The parapeted range has end and central window bays that are set forward, featuring sunken panels and raised sections at the parapet. Wider doorways in the projected bays have rubble flat arches, and the windows are horned 6/6-pane sashes. There are lead hoppers in the central and flanking projected bays, one of which is inscribed with "GR 1723." The roof is adorned with nine pedimented dormers, each with 6/6-pane sashes, including one at each end. The roofs also have heavy leaded rolls around the central flat section.

The interior has not been inspected but is noted to contain an 18th-century central spine wall, timber board panelling, and partitions, along with some original wooden rails.

Historically, this store is one of the original ordnance stores for gun carriages and equipment, making it one of the earliest structures in a Royal Dockyard. It pairs with No. 8 Store across the way and was originally built against a quay that curved around its outer sides. It is recognized as a fine and remarkably complete example of an early 18th-century warehouse within the best surviving naval ordnance yard in the country.
