Description

Allenbrook is a house dating from approximately the early 17th century. It is built of stone rubble with a bitumen-coated slate roof, gable ends, and rendered brick end stacks. A cloam oven projection is visible on the right-hand side. The original plan likely comprised two rooms and a cross passage, with a larger hall kitchen to the right and a parlour to the left. The house was extended in the early 19th century with a rear outshut and in the mid-20th century with a single-room range set back from the left-hand gable end.

The front elevation is regular, featuring three windows. The ground floor has a 2-light casement window with glazing bars on the left and a late 20th-century 5-light bay window on the right. A part-glazed door is located near the centre, sheltered by a late 20th-century stone rubble gabled porch.

Inside, a 20th-century staircase is found in a widened passage, and a partition was previously moved to the right. The rooms contain 20th-century chimney pieces. The hall kitchen retains a complete early 17th-century ceiling of cross beams and floor joists; the chamfered cross beams feature spade stops on the rear, although the stops on the front may have been covered or removed during the addition of the bay window. The unmoulded floor joists are set at right angles. The parlour has one early 17th-century cross beam with spade stops and mortices for floor joists, alongside heavier, closely-set beams, with lighter 19th-century beams closer to the passage. Roof timbers were not accessible for inspection, but the straight feet of the principals visible from the first floor are relatively slight, chamfered, and suggest a possibly mid-18th century roof structure.
