Description

Rose Cottage is a cottage dating from the early 19th century, with its rear wall likely part of an earlier building from the 17th century, possibly associated with the adjacent Much-in-Little cottage on the right. The structure is built of slate stone rubble and features a slate roof with half-hipped ends and two brick stacks at the left end.

The cottage has an interesting double-depth, two-room plan, being one room wide with the entrance on the right and a staircase immediately behind it. The large front room on the left is heated by an end stack, while a small service room at the rear is separated by a timber and lath and plaster screen. The rear wall is notably thicker than the front wall, suggesting its origin as part of the earlier Much-in-Little cottage, which is connected on the right. There is a blocked door that once provided access between the two cottages.

The building is two storeys high and has a regular two-window front. It features a late 19th or early 20th century six-pane sash window and a plank door on the right, which is sheltered by a slate hood over the porch. Slate strings are present above the ground floor openings, with a six-pane sash window and a four-pane sash window on the first floor.

Inside, there is a timber newel stair located at the rear of the entrance passage, rising in a quarter turn. The front room has a 19th-century plaster ceiling and a plaster partition to the rear, along with a 20th-century fireplace. There is a blocked door to the rear right that originally led to Much-in-Little. The first floor was not inspected.

Rose Cottage is the central cottage of three that form a picturesque group in the unaltered village of Trevalga.
