Description
The courtyard walls and gateway are attached to the front of Rialton Manor and enclose a front courtyard. Dating back to the 15th century, the walls have undergone later alterations and some rebuilding. They are constructed of slatestone rubble with granite dressings.
The walls form a courtyard approximately 12 metres deep and 15 metres wide. A gateway, likely re-used, is situated in the front range, and a possible window opening is recessed in the left-hand corner. The wall on the left side is low, about 1½ metres high with a rendered coping, and rises to approximately 2½ metres on the front range. This section includes a 4-centred arched granite doorway into the courtyard, featuring recessed spandrels and roll-moulding, with the dressed side facing into the courtyard; it appears to have been re-sited. In the left-hand corner, the wall is built of squared granite with a ridged stone roof over a small recess with stone jambs. The right-hand wall is also lower, featuring a 4-centred arched doorway and a single window opening, both hollow-chamfered. A further 4-centred arched doorway is located at the end, by the house. This section may originally have been the end wall of part of the house and has been rebuilt on the outer side as a 20th-century range. Internally, the openings facing into the garage have splayed reveals.
