Description
Besowsa Farm includes stables, shippons, an engine house, and a wagon shed, located approximately 40 metres south of Besowsa Farmhouse. This complex dates from the mid-19th century and is constructed from granite rubble with quoins and dressings, topped with slate roofs. The layout is L-shaped, featuring extensions for machinery to the north and west, along with an outshut to the north.
Inside the left side of the L, there is a single-storey cattle shelter that is open to the inner side and supported by granite posts, although it is now partly blocked. The roof here is hipped to the left. The two-storey stable block has a central door flanked by windows on both the ground and first floors, with the roof also hipped to the left. The main shippon block, which is slightly taller, features a series of doors and windows on both floors, with keyed, slightly arched lintels. The windows retain their original shutters, which have three panes above. Most of the doors and hinges are old or original.
Inside, the stables accommodate six horses and have original tall wooden partitions with iron feeding racks that are filled through holes in the loft floor. The shippon range is designed for ten cows in pairs, complete with a feeding passage and ventilation holes at the front, and a loft above. An original wooden wheel remains in the adjoining machine rooms, which were initially powered by a water wheel located in the field below. The main entrance features an engaged round gate pier with coping next to the wagon shed.
