Description
The St Austell War Memorial, built around 1920, is made of granite. It features an ornately-carved Celtic cross that stands on a tapered stone plinth with a two-stepped base. The lower step has been extended forward to include a slanting stone base. The inscriptions are in black metal lettering. On the north face of the plinth, it reads:
TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN SACRED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE / ANCIENT PARISH OF ST AUSTELL / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918
The names of 200 men who fell in the Great War are inscribed on the other sides of the plinth. The north face of the upper step has the inscription:
AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS AREA / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF / 1939-1945
The names of 144 men who fell in the Second World War are inscribed on the sloping face of the extended lower base.
