Description

Primrose Cottage is a late 17th-century house, with additions likely from the early 19th century and some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed from painted stone rubble, partially rendered, and has a slurried slate roof with an axial stack featuring weathered slate. The original plan consisted of two rooms, a larger room to the left and a smaller parlour to the right. Each room was originally heated by a back-to-back fireplace with a baffle entry against the stack. In the early 19th century, a single-story outshut with a loft was added to the rear of the parlour, and a smaller single-story outshut was added to the rear of the larger room. The exterior presents an asymmetrical two-window front with 20th-century two-light casement windows. A gabled porch with side lights is present; the inner door is 20th century. To the right, there are ground and first-floor windows; to the left, a 20th-century half-glazed door and a window are located at ground and first floor. The doorway may have been inserted in the 19th century, when the house was occupied as two dwellings. The left end of the house is blind and rendered. The rear elevation includes the outshut to the left, featuring a loft and a three-light window with a timber lintel and a VR letterbox set in the wall. A small single-story outshut sits to the right, with a small two-light casement window. At the right end, the rear of the main house displays a four-pane light at ground floor and a two-light casement with a timber lintel at first floor. The room to the left contains roughly hewn beams with narrow chamfers, and the chamfered feet of the principal rafters can be seen.
