Description

Lantewy Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating to 1640, and potentially incorporating an earlier building, with substantial alterations and enlargement in the mid-19th century and few later changes. Constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings and quoins, it has a slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends. A gable end stack is located on the left, with axial and a rear lateral stack to the right, the latter featuring a shaped granite top.

Originally, the plan was composed of three rooms, with a stair hall replacing a passage. The room to the right was likely a hall and may have been originally heated by the rear lateral stack, while the room to the left, heated by an axial stack, and the room to the end left was likely a kitchen, heated by the gable end stack. The stair hall appears to have been enlarged from an original passage, and a front gabled bay was likely extended in the mid-19th century in front of the room to the left of the original passage. A two-storey service wing, including a dairy, is situated to the rear of the central room.

The front of the farmhouse presents an asymmetrical four-window facade. A projecting gabled bay is located second from the left, and a porch is set in the angle to the right. All windows are 3-light casements with granite hollow-chamfered frames, leaded lights of the late 19th or early 20th century, and hoodmoulds which continue as a string course at both ground and first floor levels. The porch has a hipped roof supported on a granite pier, and features a plain door with strap hinges. A niche above the porch is said to have once held a coat of arms; a date stone displaying the initials ISMS (John and Mary Smith) is located at first floor to the right. The left end of the facade is blind. The right end has a four-light granite casement on both ground and first floors, each with king mullions and a hoodmould; the first floor hoodmould continues as a string course. The rear elevation includes an external lateral stack to the left.

Inside, the front right room retains a 17th-century granite fireplace surround featuring a wide segmental arch, hollow-chamfered, with vestigial ogee and carved panels with geometric designs. The room above retains only the hearthstone of its fireplace, now blocked. The room to the end left has a flat granite lintel to the fireplace, with an oven to the right and a possible smoking chamber to the left, now a cupboard. A slate mantel is supported on corbels.
