Description
The lychgate and churchyard wall along the road in St Allen Village date back to the 15th century. The structure is made of killas stone, with the wall featuring herringbone moorstone laid as a Cornish hedge. It has a slate roof with crested ridge tiles.
The lychgate spans a ditch and has a rectangular plan. It features battered end piers with return nibs at the front, which support weathered painted wrought iron gates. These gates have a ring-decorated center rail and lily terminals. The openings are spanned by moulded timber lintels that run the full length of the lychgate, which has a pitched roof. The churchyard wall extends approximately 66 meters from the Old Rectory gate to the north, indented for the lychgate.
