Description
Round Cottage is a cottage built around 1800, with a 20th-century extension added to the rear. It features painted slatestone and cob construction, topped with an original scantle slate roof and two conical roofs over half-round wings. Brick chimneys rise from the side walls. The cottage has a unique design with two D-shaped rooms connected by a central vestibule and staircase. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window north front, which includes a central arched doorway with a window above, flanked by semi-circular projecting wings that have original pointed arch-headed openings. The first-floor windows feature small gables above them. The original Gothick detailed door and original two-light casement windows, four of which have Gothic tracery and some surviving original glazing bars, add to its character. A slate-roofed lean-to canopy covers the door. The interior remains unaltered, showcasing an original arched doorway to the stairs, original two-panel doors with HL hinges, open beamed ceilings on the ground floor, and the original roof structure. The similarities between Round Cottage and the nearby round houses of Veryan suggest that it may have been built by the same builder, Hugh Rowe of Lostwithiel, possibly for the same patron, The Reverend Jeremiah Trist. Round Cottage is considered a much more intact example.
