Description
Clapper Mill is a Grade II listed building that has been converted into living accommodation, with an adjoining miller's house. The original house dates from the 18th century and was extended in the 19th century. The mill, likely from the 18th century, was remodeled in the 19th century. The overall layout is approximately rectangular. The original two-room plan of the 18th-century miller's house is in the middle, which has been heightened and extended to the left in the 19th century, with additional service rooms added at the rear around the same time. To the right, there is a deeper plan mill built at right angles to the house, which is larger at the rear and features an overshot wheel on its right side. There is a small 20th-century addition at the far left.
The exterior of the building is two storeys high and has an overall four-window east front. The original two-window front of the house has a remodeled doorway, which is now a window, located to the right of the center. The first floor features early to mid-19th-century hornless sash windows, while the ground floor has 20th-century four-pane horned sashes. The left side has a one-window front 19th-century addition with a doorway on its right. There is a 20th-century door and a four-pane hornless sash window on the first floor to the left. The mill on the right has a tall gable end at the front, with a doorway at the far left and a window on the right and above. It features a 20th-century divided ledged door and 8-pane two-light casements. The gable end is lower on the right side, and there is a large complete iron wheel at the right-hand end.
Inside, the house has a large 18th-century granite fireplace with an unhewn wooden lintel at the left-hand end of the original part, along with 19th-century moulded ceiling beams. The first floor was not inspected. The mill contains original 19th-century machinery that is in good condition.
