Description

Trevelloe House is a small country house built in 1911 for W.E.T. Bolitho and designed by Arnold Mitchell, an architect who previously worked with Lutyens. The house is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings to ground floor sill level, and has a Cumbrian slate roof. The roof incorporates sprocketted projecting eaves, swept valleys with gable ends, and a central cross gable. Decorative moulded oak bargeboards and axial chimneys with moulded granite cornices are also present. A hipped roofed dovecote sits atop the service wing.

The building’s plan remains virtually unaltered, with a rectangular footprint and fireplaces within the cross walls between the three bays. The first and second floors are integrated into a tall roof space with a central cross gable. A single-storey range of storerooms is located to the far right, connected to the main house via a narrow walled courtyard. The original layout includes a drawing room on the left, an entrance hall behind it, a central dining room, a stair hall, and an entrance hall (originally an external sitting room) alongside a kitchen and smaller former service rooms. A series of store rooms, originally for coal, wood, lamps, and soot, are situated to the right, with access via a narrow walled courtyard.

The house features thick rubble outer walls, brick inner walls, and a cavity between them. It was designed with water closets, central heating, and electrical generation. Original architects' plans and elevations are in the owner’s possession.

The exterior has ground floor walls under the eaves and two floors within the high roof space, with windows in the gables. The south front presents a nearly symmetrical facade with a central cross gable, and includes three projecting canted bays to the ground floor, two of which are windows while the third now contains a door. The attic floors have windows of varying sizes, including a 3-light window and two 2-light window. The west entrance front features a central bay window and a granite doorway with roll-moulded jambs and lintel, leading to an original small panelled oak door. Rear elevations have two bay windows.

The interior, largely unaltered and of high quality, is predominantly in a 18th-century style incorporating Art Nouveau details. Notable features include moulded and carved plaster ceilings, chimney pieces, two-panelled doors, a panelled stair hall, original green and patterned tiles, and numerous original fittings, particularly within the drawing room, stair hall, and dining room.
