Description

Rooke Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the early to mid-18th century and was extended in the early and mid-19th century. It is constructed of stone rubble with dressed granite quoins and features a slate roof with hipped ends on the front range. Originally, there was a hipped projection at the rear and an extension with gable ends. Brick chimney stacks are located on the left-hand hipped end and on both gable ends of the rear extensions.

The early to mid-18th century part of the house probably had a two-room and cross passage plan, with a rear wing on the right likely intended for the stairs. In the early 19th century, the house was extended with a service range of one-room plan added to the rear left, creating a double depth layout. A further extension in the mid-19th century introduced a one-room plan wing that is set back and projects from the right-hand side elevation. By the late 19th century, a range of service rooms, including a dairy, was added to the rear left in a single-storey outshut extension.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a regular three-to-one window front. The left-hand range features two early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sash windows. The right-hand side has a large 16-pane hornless sash on the ground floor and a tripartite hornless sash on the first floor. A partly glazed door from the 19th century is located on the right-hand side of the front range.

Inside, the front part of the earlier range has had its partitions removed to create one large room. The kitchen is located at the rear on the left and includes a large 19th-century kitchen fireplace, a plaster ceiling, and meat hooks. The rear projecting wing of the earlier range has chamfered timber ceiling beams, some of which have straight cut stops. The roof of the main range, as well as those of the rear projecting and service ranges, dates from the mid to late 19th century, with the roof above the one-room range set back on the right featuring lapped and pegged collars and an apex.
