Description
St Aldhelm is a house dating from the early 18th century, constructed of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a slate roof featuring gable ends and brick chimney stacks. The layout consists of two large rooms of nearly equal size, connected by a cross passage leading to a framed imperial staircase at the rear. A small service room has been added to the rear on the left side.
The house has a long, low profile with a regular four-window front, showcasing early 19th-century hornless sash windows. The ground floor includes a 20-pane sash window on the left and two 16-pane sashes on the right. Near the center, there is a 19th-century six-panel door, which is sheltered by a 20th-century stone rubble gabled porch featuring reused and likely repositioned chamfered granite jambs and a lintel. A two-light timber mullion window from the 17th century is located in the left-hand side wall of the porch. The first floor has four 16-pane sash windows. The service room at the rear on the left is covered by a continuous catslide roof, with an additional 20th-century extension at the rear right.
Inside, the ground floor boasts complete slate flag floors. The cross passage retains its original partitions, and the ceiling beams are fairly slight and roughly cut. The fireplace in the left room is made from reused dressed stone, reputedly sourced from Bodmin Gaol, while the right room features a 20th-century fireplace. The early 18th-century framed imperial staircase at the rear has a 19th-century balustrade added. On the first floor, the central bedroom is divided by a mid-18th-century timber screen with bowtell moulded uprights. The ground floor has moulded doorcases and four-panel doors, while the first floor features mid-18th-century two-panel doors with HL hinges. The roof timbers have straight feet of principals that are chamfered below collar level, although the roof structure has not been fully inspected.
