Description

Two shops with dwellings above, likely built in the mid-19th century. The buildings are constructed using granite rubble gable and cross walls, with cross-wall construction, and have rendered and slate-hung facades on a timber stud framework. They have a double-depth, trapezoidal plan, with the right-hand end wall sharply canted back.

The buildings are three stories high and feature four bays (2+2), with each unit having a double-fronted shop window at ground floor and a doorway to the left. The shop doorways are recessed, and the shop windows are vertically divided into four 2-stage lights (three to the front and one returned), with slender columns mounted on low plinths. Number 2 has consoles to the cornice above the shop front and side door, and this side door has a large overlight with margin panes. Above, number 2 has a rendered facade with banded corner pilasters, while number 4 is slate-hung. Both buildings have two 16-pane sashes on each upper floor, with exposed boxes and raised sills. A continuous projecting eaves runs across the top. There are two chimneys on the ridge and one at the left gable.

The buildings occupy a striking location immediately south of the railway viaduct, which towers above them.
