Description

This is a pair of shops with living accommodation above, dating from the early to mid-19th century and subsequently altered. The building is constructed with cross-wall techniques, featuring an uncoursed rubble gable wall made of killas stone, accented with granite quoins. The facade is rendered above the ground-floor shop fronts, and the roof is slate-covered with brick chimneys. The plan is rectangular, with a projecting stair turret at the rear.

The building has three stories and three bays, appearing almost symmetrical. The ground floor is characterized by two 19th-century shop fronts on either side of a central entrance passage. The shop windows each have four tall lights with semi-elliptical arched heads, supported by slender wooden shafts. The inner light of each window is recessed to create a doorway, and the entire arrangement was formerly enclosed by a horizontal sliding shutter – the curved track of which is visible in the soffit of the fascia. The three doorways all have square overlights; the doorway on the left has been altered, while the others retain margin panes at the top and bottom, with coloured glass in the central section. A deep fascia is topped with a dentilled cornice.

The upper floors display a banded pilaster on the right-hand corner. The central window on each floor is blind or blocked, with the first-floor window featuring a cornice supported by consoles. To the left of this central window is a shallow oriel, with altered glazing, and to the right is a four-pane sash window. The outer bays on the second floor also have 16-pane sash windows, all with wooden architraves. Gable chimneys are visible.
