Description
This is a pair of houses, later converted into flats, dating from the early 19th century, and altered and extended subsequently. The houses are constructed of dressed granite with ashlar dressings and quoins, topped with a slate roof and brick chimneys. They have an L-shaped plan, comprising a double-depth main block and a rear wing to the left.
The front facade is symmetrical with three bays and three storeys. Features include a plinth, a band above the ground floor, and a panelled band at the second floor. A recessed porch has a semi-elliptical, ashlar architrave with imposts, a keystone, and a cornice, leading to altered entrance doors with original overlights. There are two tall windows on the ground floor with altered glazing, and three sash windows on each upper floor, the second-floor windows being square but all with glazing bars and flat-arched heads. An eaves cornice is detailed with small brackets. Gable chimneys are present.
The rear of the building contains a large tripartite sash window at first floor level in the wing. Inside the left-hand portion is a geometrical staircase with stick balusters and a ramped handrail with a wreath. A moulded plaster cornice is found in the former drawing room within the wing. A former partition wall at ground floor is now pierced by archways. Some renovations were undertaken in 1988 as part of an initial survey.
