Description
A pair of houses built in the early 19th century in Redruth. They are constructed from granite ashlar with a likely slate roof. The houses sit on a triangular plot but present a square facade, designed in a classical style, reflecting some features of Palladian architecture. The building is three-and-a-half storeys high, including a full service basement. The symmetrical facade features giant pilasters which extend to the two upper floors, rising from a string course; there are three pilasters – one at each end and one centrally located. A plan frieze, moulded cornice, and panelled parapet, interrupted by four short balustrades, complete the facade. The basement, visible as a plinth, has single 12-pane sash windows in each part. The raised ground floor has a doorway at each end, with recessed entrances and panelled reveals, accessed by parallel steps protected by wrought-iron ramped railings featuring alternating waved and scroll-decorated bars; matching railings also protect the basement area. The ground floor windows are large tripartite sashed windows with glazing bars, while the upper floors have a mixture of 12-pane sashes and square six-pane sashes. All windows are framed by splayed voussoirs and keystones. The principal ground floor rooms have moulded plaster cornices, although these rooms are now partitioned. Inside, there are various 19th-century decorated cast-iron fireplaces, along with a Cornish range and washing boiler in the basement.
