Description
The limekiln at Halton Quay is a structure dating from the 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed from slatestone and Devon limestone rubble and has a rectangular plan, measuring about 15 metres long and 10 metres wide. The kiln is unusually tall and built into the bank at the rear to allow for top loading. It is located on a quay along the Tamar River, facilitating water transport. The front of the kiln features a projecting wing on the left and two round-arched openings on the right, both with dressed stone arches. These openings lead to vaulted chambers that have stoking holes at the rear.
