Piggery at Approx 20m East of Kestle Barton Farmhouse and Kestle Cottage

The piggery located approximately 20 meters east of Kestle Barton Farmhouse and Kestle Cottage dates from the mid to late 19th century. It features shale rubble walls with dressed granite thresholds, jambstones, and lintels. The roof is mostly hipped and covered with scantle slate, and there is a brick chimney over the swill kitchen. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the kitchen at the angle and a range of pig pens that include rear feeding passages in both arms of the L. It is a single-storey structure with south and east fronts.

The south front has, from left to right, a single doorway and two pairs of doorways, with one doorway in each pair blocked. The remaining doorways have ledged doors with strap hinges on pintails fixed to the jambstones. The east front has similar features, including a wide doorway on the left, a pair of doorways in the middle, and a doorway on the right. The rear of the west range has a doorway leading to the kitchen on the far left and a louvred window in the middle of the feeding passage wall on the right.

Inside, the piggery retains its original features, including a large fireplace with a granite lintel in the kitchen, slate pen partitions, and the original roof structure. A rubble yard wall encloses the ends of the L, creating a rectangular exercise area. This piggery is a complete example of a 19th-century agricultural building and is an important part of a group of 18th and 19th-century farm buildings associated with a farmhouse that dates from the 16th to 17th century.
