Description
Crane Cottage, located south of Riverside, is a house that underwent remodelling in the early 19th century, although it is based on an earlier structure. The exterior features painted and rendered rubble and cob walls, with slate sills and an asbestos slate roof topped with brick chimneys at the gable ends. It has cast iron ogee gutters. The layout originally consisted of three rooms with a cross passage between the left-hand room and the middle room, and an external stair located behind the middle room. The house is built against a steep bank at the rear and has thick walls.
It stands two storeys high with a slightly irregular three-window west front. The first floor has early 19th-century 12-pane, two-light horizontal sliding sash windows, while the ground floor features three 20th-century two-light casements. There is a doorway within a 20th-century conservatory situated between the left-hand and middle windows. Inside, the cottage retains some early 19th-century panelled doors and a stick baluster stair, although the original fireplaces are partly blocked. Crane Cottage is part of a group of fairly unaltered houses located at the head of the creek at Helford.
