Description
The remains of St Thomas Priory consist of the priory church and associated buildings, dating from the 12th, 13th, and 15th centuries. The site was abandoned and partly destroyed in 1540, with excavations taking place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The remains are constructed from slatestone with volcanic stone dressings and feature a complex plan across a large area, part of which has been excavated. This includes what is believed to be the priory church, which has steps leading up to the east end and complex moulded abutments and jambs. A newel stair is located a short distance north of the crossing, and there are two stone chest tombs partly within the crossing. Additional remains can be seen near the southeast corner and south of the porch of the Church of St Thomas-by-Launceston. The maximum height of the visible remains is approximately 1.5 metres.
