Description

Trenode School is a chapel, built in 1872 as a memorial to Rev. J Buller Kitson, and later converted to a school in the 1960s. It is constructed of stone rubble with freestone dressings, and has a steeply pitched slate roof with a gable end on the west side and a canted end on the east side. A bellcote containing a bell and a brick chimney stack stand on the west gable. The original plan consisted of a single-cell chapel with an apsidal east end and a late 19th or early 20th century cross wing addition on the west side, connected by a small porch.

The elevations are single-storey and regular, with largely intact fenestration. The south elevation has a gabled stone rubble entrance porch on the left, featuring a moulded brick arch and a 19th-century door. To the right is a six-light mullion and transom window with cusped heads to the lights. The east end originally had five lancet windows with plate tracery, with a trefoil over each trefoil-headed light; one window has been replaced by a 20th-century door in a larger opening. The north elevation features a four-light and a two-light mullion and transom windows, also with cusped heads. A rendered cross wing, with a slate roof and gable ends, was added in the late 19th or early 20th century and is connected to the chapel by a low porch.

The interior retains many original fittings, including doors and a memorial plaque. It also features an original ornate open timber roof with wind braces. A previous school and school house in Leyland were converted to the Morval Memorial Hall and a private house in 1965.
