Description
Burncoose Lodge, along with its walls and gate-piers to the northwest, is an estate entrance lodge built around 1830-1840, with later extensions from the 19th century. The structure features freestone ashlar walls and chimneys, topped with dry Delabole slate roofs that have gable ends on the east and west, and hips on the wings, all showcasing projecting eaves. The original T-shaped design includes a three-room plan, with similar additions to the rear that create an almost mirror image layout. The lodge is a single-storey building.
The west front has a central projecting gable with a window beneath a flat stone arch. The flanking wings are of equal size, with the left wing featuring a central window, while the right wing is blind but includes a porch at the angle, supported by a square Tuscan pier and respond pilasters that provide access to the side wall of the main section. The north and south fronts have paired adjoining wings that project and feature two-window fronts. All windows are original 16-pane hornless sashes. The building has a continuous plinth, moulded verges, and panelled paired chimneys with moulded plinths and cornices.
The estate entrance to the northwest consists of paired gateways set between three ashlar gate-piers, which have cornices and sloping tops with square central areas designed for statues. The central and left-hand piers are enclosed by a wall, and the surrounding quadrant walls are also made of ashlar, featuring plinths and moulded copings. The interior has not been inspected.
