Description

Darley Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins in the 17th century, a front range dating to around 1800, and alterations made in the mid-19th century and the 20th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with granite quoins. The roof is slate, with ridge tiles at the gable ends. The front range has gable-end stacks in granite, each with a cornice and shaped top, while the rear wing has an axial stack also with a cornice and shaped top. The rear wing appears to be the truncated remains of a three-room plan house—only two rooms survive, heated by an axial stack. The outer room was built into a bank, without a fireplace, and features a loft at first floor. Around 1800, the house was reoriented, with a front range of two rooms added at a right angle, slightly off-centre to the left. A larger room sits to the right, and a smaller room to the left, both heated by gable-end stacks. A mid-19th century stairwell was later added to the rear of the entrance passage. A single-storey, unheated outshut was attached to the rear right, likely in the mid to late 19th century.

The two-storey front façade is nearly symmetrical with three windows. All windows are paired 12-pane sashes dating to around 1800, with cambered stone heads. The central entrance has a panelled and glazed door with an overlight and a hood. A 12-pane sash window is positioned centrally on the first floor. Only the left end has large granite quoins. The left side of the building is painted rubble, while the right side reveals an external stack and an attached, single-storey, open-fronted rubble shed with a corrugated iron roof. The rear of the main range features a stair tower with a hipped roof and crested ridge tiles. To the left, there is a small, single-storey outshut with a four-light casement to the rear. A door at the end provides access to the loft above the end room. The gable end of the wing is blind. On the left side, the wing is painted rubble; on ground floor, the end room has a door and a two-light casement, while the first floor has a two-light, three-pane casement and a small 19th-century 16-pane sash. The inner room has a 20th-century porch set in the angle of the main front range, with a plate-glass sash and sidelights. First floor windows are two 3-light 20th-century casements. Attached to the rear of the rear wing is a short rubble wall with a re-set datestone inscribed "IDE 1733."

The mid-19th century stairwell is of unusual quality for a farmhouse, constructed in a Gothic style. It features an open-well staircase with a balustrade forming an arcade of pointed arches and a skylight above with a brattished wall-plate. A small, two-light, cusped window is located to the side of the stairwell. During the house's remodelling, the inner room of the rear wing was used as a kitchen, and the outer room became an unheated storeroom.
