Description
A terrace of seven large houses located at 1-7 Grove Place, Falmouth, built in the 1840s. The houses are primarily of stucco construction on a rubble base, with brick stacks marking the axial and end positions. The design follows a double-depth plan, and the houses are arranged over a basement with three storeys above. The facade presents a symmetrical arrangement of windows, with a 2:2:3:3:3:3:3-window range. Architectural details include channelled rustication to the basement, end pilasters, ground and first-floor sill bands, architraves with cornices, and first-floor consoles. A moulded parapet cornice tops the building. Originally, the houses had hornless sash windows with glazing bars. Numbers 1-3, 5, and 6 retain their original windows. Number 4 has been altered with the addition of late 19th-century two-storey canted bays on the left and right sides, and replacement windows on the second floor. Number 7 also features a late 19th-century two-storey canted bay, situated under two closely-spaced second-floor windows on the right side; original sashes remain on the second floor, with later sashes elsewhere. All the houses have original porches, characterised by square columns and pediments decorated with anthemion motifs. The porches are centrally placed on numbers 3-6, to the left of number 2, and at the far left and right of the terrace. Original panelled doors with overlights provide entry. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.
