Description
Farmhouse. It was likely built in the late 18th century and altered around the mid-19th century. The farmhouse is constructed of granite rubble with dressed granite lintels and quoins, and has a slurried scantle slate roof with a gable end to the right and a half-hipped end to the left. Decorative ridge tiles run along the roof. There are stacks on the right-hand gable end and to the left of the centre, both with brick shafts, and a further brick shaft on the rear slope of the roof over the kitchen.
The original house follows a double-depth plan, with two main front rooms and an entrance hall in between, containing the staircase to the rear. There are two small service rooms at the back; a kitchen to the left and a dairy to the right. Around the mid-19th century, a single-room extension was added to the left end, and a single-storey outshut was built on the right end.
The front elevation has a 1:2 window arrangement. A doorway is positioned slightly to the right of centre, with a mid-19th century panelled door and a small rectangular overlight. The windows are 19th-century sixteen-pane sashes with horns, granite lintels and cills; the left-hand windows have slate cills. A higher parapet with brick battlements screens the outshut on the right of the front.
The rear elevation features 19th-century sashes, a large round-headed stair window to the left of the centre, a panelled door with an overlight, and a 19th-century two-light casement to the left. A single-storey outshut is located at the left-hand end.
A low granite rubble garden wall runs in front of the house, with granite gate piers and an ornate iron gate.
The interior was not inspected, but is understood to have been largely unaltered, and includes a cooking range dated 1866. A plank partition is present on the left-hand side of the entrance hall.
Seworgan Farmhouse was part of the manor of Tucoys. The holding was divided into three in 1842, which may correspond with the date of the house’s remodelling.
