Description
A group of four monuments located in the churchyard against the east wall of the chancel of the Church of St Bartholomew, dating from the 18th century. The monuments are made of slate.
The first monument is dedicated to William Arther, dated 1778, featuring an incised border with a carved cherub's head and wings, along with good lettering that includes a valedictory quatrain. The second monument honors John Arthur, from 1746, with an inscription panel that has an incised nowy head, a heart pierced by arrows, and an hourglass in the spandrels, as well as a central skull with crossed bones and good lettering.
The third monument is for Joseph Sturtridge, also from 1778, which includes an egg and dart border around the inscription, floral carvings on the sides, and a frieze and pediment above. It features a carved hourglass and a perspective skull with crossed bones, combining classical style with medieval emblems, and has a Latin inscription and couplet: "Praises on tombs are trifles vainly spent/ A man's good name is his own monument." This was created by James Potter.
The fourth monument commemorates Joseph James, dated 1779, showcasing an elaborate scrolled border with carved flowers and good lettering, also by James Potter.
