Description

The Mill with Attached Gates, Wall and Railings is a pair of attached houses, now combined into a single dwelling, along with attached gates, a wall, and railings. It dates to around 1840, with later additions from the 19th century and some more recent alterations. The construction is painted slatestone rubble with brick dressings. The roof is slate, with ridge tiles and gable ends, and features gable end stacks with brick shafts.

The original plan was for a pair of houses, each with a single room and a front entrance directly into that room, heated by a gable end stack. In the late 19th century, the entrance to the right-hand house was blocked, and a single-room service wing was added to the rear left, accompanied by a single-storey outshut to the rear of the house on the right.

The exterior presents an asymmetrical two-window front. The first floor has two 19th-century 16-pane sashes. The ground floor originally had a window, door, window, and door; the door on the right has been blocked, and the door on the left has a 20th-century half-glazed door. The windows are 19th-century 36-pane sashes, with the top sash pivoted. All ground floor openings have segmental brick arches. The right side features a blind gable end with a four-pane light to the outshut. The left side has an external stack, and a straight joint connects to the rear wing, which includes a 20th-century window at ground floor. The rear gable of the wing has two 20th-century windows at ground floor and one at first floor. A 20th-century door is located to the left in the outshut.

A low rubble wall with coping and cast iron railings featuring fleur-de-lys finials encloses the front garden. A cast and wrought iron gate with hooped rails tops the wall. To the left side, a pair of granite monolith piers with rounded tops support a pair of cast iron gates with carved panels of crosswork and spear finials, each gate having a segmental top.

Inside, the ground floor of the house is now a single large room. A fireplace at the left end features a cambered timber lintel and a traditional clay oven with a door and handle.
