Description

The engine house, located approximately 120 metres south of Trelane, dates from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed from roughly coursed slate stone with red brick window dressings and features a slate roof. The building has a rectangular plan and stands three storeys tall. There is a round-headed window on each floor of the north gable end, and staggered round-headed openings on the east side. An associated outbuilding is attached to the south gable end.

Inside, the engine house has a scissor-braced roof divided into four bays. It was first mentioned in 1836 as part of Wheal Martha, also known as the Luckett or New Consols Mine, which underwent several name changes and periods of inactivity until it was renamed New Great Consols in 1867. The mine operated until 1879, focusing on the extraction of copper, silver, tin, and a small amount of gold. It was reopened on a small scale in 1946 and remained in operation until 1952.
