Description
Wotton Farmhouse is an early 19th-century farmhouse that has undergone some 20th-century alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble, with the left side being slate-hung. The slate roof features crested ridge tiles and gable ends with stacks that have rendered shafts.
The building has a double depth plan, with a central entrance leading to principal rooms on the front left and right, a rear stair hall, and a rear kitchen. The thickness of the wall between the front and rear rooms suggests that this may have been an earlier house that was significantly remodeled in the early 19th century, with a dairy added as a lean-to on the right side.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a symmetrical three-window range, featuring 19th-century windows. On the first floor, there are two 16-pane sashes and a central 12-pane sash in exposed boxes. The ground floor has 16-pane sashes on the right and left with stone segmental heads, and a central porch with a hipped slate roof and a 20th-century door. Large granite quoins and slatestone footings are present, with a straight joint to the right leading to the single-storey dairy addition with an attic. The right side of the dairy has two 2-light 8-pane casements, while the rear of the house lacks large quoins. There is a small single-storey rubble addition at the rear of the dairy.
At the rear, the first floor features three 20th-century windows and a stair light, while the ground floor has a single-storey lean-to along the rear of the kitchen, which includes a 19th-century 3-light casement. The porch has a hipped roof and a 9-pane light at the front, which was formerly a door. There is also a 20th-century window on the ground floor to the right.
Inside, the stair hall features an open-well stair with a moulded handrail, stick balusters, and columnar newels. The front room to the left has panelled shutters and a mid-19th-century marble chimneypiece. The kitchen includes a fireplace with granite jambs, and the back of a curved oven is visible inside the dairy at the base of the stack. The kitchen also has a boxed-in service stair leading to the front, with an 18th-century door that has strap hinges. Between the front and rear rooms, there is a lateral passage with a thick wall on the side of the rear rooms. On the first floor, the doors to the two rear rooms both have L hinges.
