Description
This is a gateway and associated walls marking the east entrance to Lanhydrock Park, dated 1657, constructed for John and Lucy Robartes. The structure is built from granite and slatestone rubble with granite dressings, and incorporates 20th-century wooden gates. The design consists of a central, wide gateway flanked by walls that sweep forward approximately 15 metres to terminal piers. A pedestrian gateway is situated on either side of the central gateway. The central gateway is defined by a pair of large, square granite piers featuring roll mouldings undercut at the inner angle and a cornice. These piers are topped by obelisks with ball finials, reaching an overall height of approximately 4 metres, and contain a 20th-century wooden gate. The flanking walls are constructed from rubble, curving in a quadrant and rising to about 3 metres high, increasing in height to accommodate the ground’s slope. The terminal piers are square granite ashlar, also surmounted by obelisks with ball finials. Each pedestrian arch features a round slatestone arch and a 20th-century wooden gate.
