Description

Farmhouse. It likely originated in the 17th century and was remodelled around the mid-19th century. The farmhouse is built of local stone rubble with granite quoins. It has a rag slate roof with gable ends, with a catslide roof extending over an outshot addition. Stone rubble end stacks are visible on the east and west gable ends, with a rendered brick stack to the rear wing on the south side. The plan is an “L” shape, with the north front range featuring a two-room and cross-passage layout. According to an earlier survey by Norden around 1584, the site contained a house of considerable importance, and it’s possible the farmhouse incorporates elements of those earlier structures. The ground rises to the west of the front elevation. A rear wing of two rooms adjoins the lower left-hand room, heated by a stack. A circa 19th century outshot extends across the front (north) elevation, apparently in two builds, with a straight joint towards the west. A circa 19th century outshot extension is also located on the lower east gable end. The front elevation features plank doors near the centre and 19th and 20th century casement windows. The rear (south) elevation has an asymmetrical two-window front with late 19th or early 20th century six-pane and four-pane sashes on the ground floor and a 4-pane sash in a gabled half dormer and a four-pane sash to the right. The west elevation of the rear wing includes a two-light casement, a four-panel door, and a 20th-century window to the right, with a 1-light casement and a circa 19th century 20-pane sash window above. The interior was inaccessible during a 1986 survey, and the original layout remains uncertain.
