Description

The farm buildings around the farmyard to the north of Penfound Farmhouse date from the 1880s and were built for Squire Edward Mucklow of Whitstone Head. Constructed from squared stone brought to course with red and blue brick dressings, they feature slate roofs with rendered coped gables and some slate hanging.

The south-west range includes a barn with a loft above, while the north-east range consists of two two-storey buildings and one single-storey building: a cartshed with a loft above, a two-storey building that may have served as an office, and a single-storey building that may have been a calf-house. The south-east range contains a single-storey shippon. The north-east range also features two single-storey buildings and a central cart entrance.

Projecting from the barn into the center of the yard is a single-storey dung house with three openings under brick arches on each side. The concrete floor of the yard slopes down to the dung house. Window openings throughout have brick arches and center pivot two-pane windows. The doorways also feature brick arches and brick jambs, with most of the original timber stable doors still intact.

The entrance to the farmyard is notable, with buildings flanking the gateway that have canted corners on the north-east side. The gateposts are square in section and topped with pyramidal concrete caps, and there are contemporary iron gates. The dung house has canted corners and a hipped roof at the north-east end. Edward Mucklow, who died in 1906, made significant improvements to his estate, including ambitious land drainage schemes and the construction and renovation of farmyards as planned farms. He was also involved in extending the railway to Bude and served as the last Chairman of the Bude Harbour and Canal Company.
