SW 72 SW ST MARTIN ST. MARTIN -IN-MENEAGE 4/237 Forge Cottage and house adjoining - at north side and cartshed

GV II

Pair of adjoining houses and cartshed. Circa early C19. Painted stone rubble with granite lintels to ground floor, cob with wooden lintels above. Grouted scantle slate roof, hipped on the right, with brick chimneys over gable end, left, and partly wall. Cast iron ogee gutters. Each house is a 2-room plan with central cross passage leading to stair. Small lean-to at rear of left hand house. Right hand house rear is party wall with house adjoining at right angles. Single storey rubble cart shed adjoining left hand gable end. Overall 4 windows west front. Each house has nearly symmetrical 2-window front with nearly central doorway. C20 doors. Original 16-pane hornless sashes except for old horned copy to ground floor left. An old 2-light casement with horizontal wooden glazing bars and some leaded panes survives at the rear. Interiors not inspected. Uncommon in Cornwall to find 2 adjoining houses both so unaltered.
