Description
Mary Newman's House, located at No 48 on Culver Road, is thought to date from the 16th century and is traditionally associated with Francis Drake's wife. However, it is likely that parts of the house are from the 17th century, particularly the entrance and possibly the position of the newel staircase. The vernacular lateral chimney may have been added in the 19th century. The building has two storeys with irregularly spaced windows, two of which are mostly modern replacements, although one on the ground floor features worn oak mullions. The central doorway is made of granite and has a segmental and moulded head. The lateral chimney is constructed of rubble with a brick top, and there is a stone platform at the door due to the steepness of the hill. The house is built of rubble and has a slate roof. The interior has been significantly remodeled around 1700 and in the 19th century, featuring a through passage with plank and muntin partitions and a newel staircase that is set within the thickness of the wall at the rear.
