Description
There are two chest tombs and a headstone located approximately 5 meters east of All Hallows Church of Saint Kea. The west chest tomb dates from 1836 and is dedicated to Mary Giddy and her brother John, created by Edgcombe. The east chest tomb, from 1849, commemorates Mary Jenkins, while the headstone, dating to 1813, is for James Treloar and his wife Alice.
Both chest tombs are rectangular in shape with outer plinths that were originally intended for railings, which have since been removed. The outer plinths are made of granite, and the chests themselves are constructed from brick stretchers topped with slate lids. The west chest features an incised lid inscription for Mary Giddy, who lived from 1858 to 1822, and her brother John, who lived from 1760 to 1835. The east chest has an incised lid inscription for Mary Jenkins, who died in 1849 at the age of 61. The headstone, made of slate with concave corners and a nowy head, has an incised inscription for James Treloar, who died in 1813 at the age of 63, and his wife Alice, who also died in 1813 at the age of 62.
The current church, built in 1896, replaced an earlier church from 1802 designed by James Wyatt, and the churchyard has been in use since then. Very few tomb monuments remain from the earlier church at Old Kea, making these early 19th-century monuments historically significant for the parish, despite their modest architectural style.
