Description

Homer Cottage at Moonhills is a house that was originally built in the late 17th century and later extended in the 18th century and late 19th century, with further additions and alterations. The building is constructed of rendered slate-stone and features a slate roof divided into two sections for Moonhills and Homer Cottage. The original cottage was extended to the right in the 18th century and to the left in the late 19th century, although the latter extension is not of special architectural interest.

The house is two storeys high. The central part and the left section of the right part, known as Moonhills, has horned glazing bar sash windows directly below the eaves on the left and centre, with a 20th-century casement window on the ground floor. There is a slate-stone stack with drips, which was formerly an end stack, located at the junction with the tower range. This range features a wide gabled porch, which serves as the entrance to Moonhills, with a 6-paned sash window directly above, situated just below the eaves. Similar sash windows are found in the centre and right sections, with the first located above a 19th-century casement and the second above the gabled porch leading to Homer Cottage. An integral end stack with a brick shaft is also present.

Inside, Moonhills boasts a 17th-century moulded wood door surround with chamfer stops at the bottom of the jambs, leading into a large room to the left of the entrance. This room features chamfered joists with roughly carved stops and an inglenook fireplace with a granite lintel and an infilled cloam oven. The small room to the right of the entrance has plain 19th-century joists. Homer Cottage includes 19th-century joists on the ground floor and an open fireplace with a wood lintel and a cloam oven at the right gable end. The roof of Moonhills is supported by a collar truss.
