8/38 Range of farm buildings immediately - south west of Merthen

GV II

Range of farm buildings comprising shippons, cart-shed and stables on the ground floor and hay lofts above. Circa early to mid C19. Shale rubble with granite quoins and red brick window and doorway arches. Scantle slate roof, hipped at right hand end of main range and gable end to the left hand wing; with red clay ridge tiles. The roof to the right over the stables in slightly lower. Plan: Overall L-shaped plan. At the right hand end the range of stables, to the left of which is the cart-shed and beyond that to the left the shippons which continue without an internal partition into the short wing projecting at the left end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Long asymmetrical 9-window range, plus the wing to the left. 4 ground floor window openings in the main range with slate cills and the shippon and stable doorways all with segmental red brick arches. The wider cartshed doorway to right of centre also has a segmental brick arch. To the left of the cart-shed a flight of external granite steps up to a hay-loft doorway. There are 2 other hay loft doorways on the front of the main range and another on the inner face of the wing to the left; they all have granite thresholds and red brick segmental arches. The first floor window openings also have red brick segmental arches and slate cills. The doorways have plank doors. Interior: The partitions in the shippons are C20. The stables retain their original stalls. The roof is a nailed soft wood structure.
