Description
The range of farm buildings located immediately south west of Merthen dates from the early to mid 19th century. It consists of shippons, a cart-shed, and stables on the ground floor, with hay lofts above. The structure is built from shale rubble, featuring granite quoins and red brick arches for the windows and doorways. The roof is made of scantle slate, hipped at the right end of the main range and gabled at the left wing, topped with red clay ridge tiles. The stables have a slightly lower roof.
The overall plan is L-shaped, with stables at the right end, followed by the cart-shed, and then the shippons, which continue into the short wing at the left end without an internal partition. The building is two storeys high and has a long, asymmetrical facade with nine window openings, plus the wing on the left. There are four ground floor window openings in the main range, all with slate cills, and the doorways for the shippons and stables feature segmental red brick arches. The cart-shed has a wider doorway with a similar arch. To the left of the cart-shed, external granite steps lead up to a hay-loft doorway. There are two additional hay loft doorways on the front of the main range and one on the inner face of the left wing, all with granite thresholds and red brick segmental arches. The first floor window openings also have red brick segmental arches and slate cills, while the doorways are fitted with plank doors.
Inside, the partitions in the shippons are from the 20th century, but the stables still have their original stalls. The roof structure is made of nailed softwood.
