Description
Mudgeon Vean Farmhouse, along with its front garden wall and gate, dates from around the early 19th century and incorporates parts of an earlier house. The front of the farmhouse is stuccoed, while the other walls are painted rubble, with slate sills. It features a scantle slate roof that is half hipped to the right and has a brick chimney over the cross wall. The original layout likely included three rooms with a through passage. The lower end and part of the original hall were remodeled and partly rebuilt in the early 19th century, transforming it into a double-depth house that is two rooms wide, with a central cross passage leading to a central stair. The higher end of the house was remodeled as an attached cottage, with the fronts of the house and cottage facing in opposite directions. The original lower end, now the kitchen living room, has a back kitchen behind it, while the parlour is to the left of the passage. The farmhouse is two storeys tall and has an overall four-window front, with the cottage on the left and a nearly symmetrical three-window front on the right. The doorway of the house is centrally located and features a 20th-century door, with original 12-pane hornless sash windows. The rear of the house retains its original sashes, except for one ground floor opening which has a later sash. The interior has not been inspected. The garden wall, which is attached to the right side of the house, includes two round-headed granite monolith gate piers and a wrought iron gate. It is believed that the remodeling of the house occurred after a fire in the early 19th century, and there have been few alterations since then.
